Carbon neutrality 2035

Since 2017, the Universidade of Algarve (UAlg) has formally assumed its contribution to the pursuit of United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, because only with concrete actions by the institutions and their members, at an individual and local level, the global sustainability of our planet will be achieved.

To deal with the current climate and energy crisis, we propose to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035 and, for that, despite all the measures that have been implemented at UAlg to improve energy efficiency and responsible energy consumption, we hope to have the cooperation of the academic community.

We intend to improve our use of natural resources, reduce waste production, namely through the elimination of single-use items, especially plastic. We all have an important role in rationalizing the use of resources, which are finite.

Some measures/actions already implemented or to be implementend:

Responsible use of energy

  • Automate Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) machines, minimizing energy consumption and providing thermal comfort
  • Promote the correct use of refrigerators, adjusting the load capacity and distance from the wall
  • Adjust the work activity to the period with natural light, turning on the lights only when essential
  • Turn off electrical equipment when not in use

Responsible use of water

  • Continue installing reducers on taps
  • Optimize and expand the irrigation system
  • Promote responsible water consumption
  • Encourage the consumption of tap water and water from drinking fountains

Responsible use of other resources

  • Promote the reduction of single-use materials/ disposable, namely plastic
  • Promote the responsible use of paper
  • Promote the fight against food waste
  • Plant native plant species on campuses

We count on everyone to increase the positive impact of the University and its contribution to a healthier environment, through daily practices.
